Pneumonia Vaccine and Treatment in Philippines

September 16th, 2009 posted by Philippines Review

My father asked me today how much is the pneumonia vaccine here in the Philippines or if I have any idea of the price. When I asked him why, he said that it was the doctor’s prescription that he takes the said vaccine as a preventive measure for people of the higher age. Tried a few clicks here and there and found none who would give an exact price so I decided to make a few calls using online search of the clinics and hospitals.

Few Pointers

I found out that pneumonia is the top #1 killer in the world for children. It also states in the reports that pneumonia in the Philippines is 10th among countries with most cases. There were also claims that in the Philippines, 26% of children who get Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) have higher chances of dying.

How do You Get Pneumonia?

First of all pneumonia only gets in the system of a person if he or she has a very low body immune system. It may be caused due to bacteria, virus, fungi or microbe infection in the lungs where the air sacks get inflamed.

Common Symptoms (according to the Department of Health)

  • fever with of without chills
  • coughing which may bring up yellow, green, rust of bloody phlegm
  • pain in the chest when breathing or coughing
  • shortness of breath
  • rapid and shallow breathing
  • fatigue
  • sweating and flushed color of skin
  • loss of appetite or upset stomach

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment of pneumonia usually takes a few medication of antibiotics being caused by bacteria and viruses. But be reminded that it should be done with the medication of a licensed physician or doctor. pneumonia vaccine is only recommended to “persons not less than 65 years old and children” according to the DOH.
