Government Service Insurance System
The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is the Philippines government agency that handles social insurance for all government employee. Created under the Commonwealth Act Number 186. This institution was put up upon the passing of the act # 186 on November 14, 1936.
The purpose of the GSIS is to be able to provide security for the future of all government employees of the Philippines. This is done through their comprehensive pension fund administration with social security benefits such as compulsory life insurance, optional life insurance, retirement benefits, and disability benefits for work-related accidents and death benefits.
The institution also offers GSIS loans such as emergency loan, calamity loan, cash advance, conso loan, policy loan, pension loan and housing loan. Other benefits that a GSIS member may avail include burial benefit, hospitalization support and more. The GSIS covers all government workers irrespective of their employment status, except:
– Members of the Judiciary and Constitutional Commissions who are covered by separated retirement laws;
– Contractual employees who have no employee-employer relationship with their agencies;
– Uniformed members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, including the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the Bureau of Fire Protection.
