i agree. internet is the cheapest link for voice and video communications. however, if the setup requires PC, this will become a hindrance to the non-techies especially the senior citizens. an Analog Phone Adaptor (ATA) or a stand-alone IP phones is the best solution cuz’ they dont need PCs. you can leave them online round-the-clock (24/7).
btw, there’s a new company called AbotTanaw who provides video call hubs in SM malls (for the Philippines) and already 2 abroad (one in HK). it’s goal is to connect OFWs and their families using videophones. you can visit their website at http://www.abottanaw.com. w/ the popularity of YM at home, we hope it will succeed considering the same videophones can be ordered online around $200.

AbotTanaw closed down. it didn’t caught fire because of the need to set an appointment call and to go to the mall. its just inconvenient for consumers. so, video chat remains the only PC-based for OFWs to see their loved ones.
for stand-alone solution, for the olds and non-techies, videophones is the way. for voice-only, try MagicBox.PH. it’s required only in the Philippines.
